Fix Bayonets! - Zulu War Weekend Event

On Sunday 29th July, I attended the Fix Bayonets event at the Cock Inn, Luddesdown, Meopham, Kent. The event was organised by Andy the landlord of the pub, who is a keen military historian, and the Gravesham Modelling Society, with the Diehards in attendance over the weekend.

There was an excellent modelling display by Gravesham Modelling Society, plus various displays of equipment and weaponry by the Zulu War Society, the Diehards and the Modelling Society. The centrepiece of this was a magnificent Gatling gun, made entirely by one man in his spare time. (see photos below)

Refreshment was provided in the form of a spit roast, barbeque and plenty of biltong. There was even a specially brewed "Rorke's Drift" beer produced by a local brewery for the event, and plenty of South African wines.

Guest of honour was His Higness Prince Velekhaye Shange, European Zulu Ambassador who started the event on the Saturday when a guard of honour was provided for his inspection at the station.

The Sunday event began with a memorial service to the dead of the Zulu War at the local church, which I unfortunately missed, but I am informed was a very moving experience, and saw the church with its biggest congregation ever.

There were regular displays from the Diehards throughout the day, as well as video screenings of Zulu, Zulu Dawn etc indoors.

In summing up, this was a very well organised and enjoyable event mostly thanks to the efforts put in by the organisers. The landlord was keen that the event should be continued next year. If so, it would be well worth a visit for anyone interested in the period or military history in general.
